1) Instead of using Microsoft Outlook Express as your email program, use Microsoft Outlook (it comes with Microsoft Office). Microsoft Outlook has an option to download only the email headers first (i.e. name and subject of email). Therefore you can see which emails you have and only download the ones you have. This is a good option if you happen to have Outlook, if not then you'd have to buy it, so go to option 2.
2) Most email providers also have a webmail site. You can look at your emails in Internet Explorer. Again, this means you can choose which ones you download. If the problem attachments are photos, some webmail sites automatically show a low resolution photo.
3) Tell your friends you're on dial-up and they shouldn't send large attachments. Instead, they can upload files to a free storage site on the Internet and you can download it from there if you want. You use a username and password so other people can't see your files. For example, Yahoo Briefcase. There are lots of free storage sites on the Internet.
