Pressing Charges

My friend was assulted on Friday night, the police came out at the time and said they would be back the next day to take a statement. They haven't arrived yet!! Anyway, she wants to press charges. Does anyone know the procedure of what will happen to the person who assulted her. Will he get arressted or will he have to come down to the police station??
