Ruling Houses in US -- how do they work??

Please could some one explain to me the differences between to Congress and Senate [ congressmen(congresspersons!!!!) and senators]. What different powers do they have and who do you have to be to get in ? EG. in GB voted in as a member of Pariament for the Commons and a Peer or co-opted by the ruling party for the Upper House. and here they have different powers..... is it similar in the US??
