Live-in accomodation
5 Answers
Last year i was working away from home in a job which provided live-in accomodation in a nearby staff house leased by my employer from the house owner. I was sacked and kicked out of the house within half an hour of each other. Was this legal, or could i have refused to leave without notice? Thanks in advance

This sounds like your employer decided you had committed gross misconduct. How long had you been employed at the time? Were you 'interviewed' to be able to put your side of the story before you were dismissed? Sounds harsh - more info needed please.

The event happened well outside of working hours (2am, finished work at 9/10pm) although the boss didnt find out until the morning. When the saw it they came to the house, rousted everyone out of bed, and demanded to know what happened. Before i was out of bed someone quite rightly said it was me, the boss asked me if it was true, i said yes, he then said "you're sacked, pack your things, you're leaving". Thinking he meant the next day i started getting stuff together slowly, and half an hour later he came back and demanded i get my stuff in his car "right now" so he could get me out of the (remote) village to a town that had a bus service (which didnt run that day, leaving me to hitch-hike the 70+miles to a town which had one). He didnt give me a chance to get all my things, some of which are still up there(maybe). All my fault, very stupid, and given his angry state at the time i understand his actions. However i do plan to do the work away from home in live in accomodation thing again, and i just feel there must be some law about notice being given for eviction from accomodation.
