Working on your theory the Police would have to keep to the speed limit and I imagine that the general public would not be happy if emergency vehicles turned up when a criminal had fled or someone had died because they had to abide by the same rules as everyone else.

The Police don't ring their partners and ask them what's for tea. They are an EMERGENCY SERVICE!

I find that the majority of people who drive whilst on the phone are bad enough drivers without it in their hand. I see them on the motorway every day and they are oblivious to what is happening around them.

I would like to see the law made far stricter and those who have total disregard for the law should have their phones confiscated.

But I do agrre about the mobile phone thing when you are driving there are 2 sorts of people that do this the 1st is the one that I have seen many a time just on there mobile and driving into my path oblivious to anybody else and there is my tipe like me that can actualy do more than 4 things at a time in my brain.
We are conditioned to do multi tasks and most of us can handle it so all I can call it that it is another stealh tax by blair and co but suppose you still think speed cameras are a safety feature and not a stealth tax well dream on

I agree with electrochem.

I cannot understand motorists who have a total disregard for the safety of others and themselves because they believe they are above the law, they are far better drivers than everyone else and are perfectly safe speeding and using mobiles whilst driving. Their sheer arrogance takes my breath away.

Driving a motor vehicle is multi-tasking in itself - operating the controls, thinking about the route and being aware of what is going on around you needs a lot of concentration, no matter how good a driver you are.

I DO keep within the speed limit, my phone IS switched off whilst I am driving and I always park correctly. I refuse to give the government the chance to penalise me for not doing so. In over 40 years of driving I have never had a fine or a penalty of any kind.

jertruc - if you don't like the rules, don't drive! Then you can use your mobile to your hearts content.

Yeah, me too. Yes I speed when conditions dictate, but only in the sense that I go maybe 10 or so miles over the limit if the road is clear. However only this morning I had to stop - even though I had right of way - because some silly mare was on the phone and not paying attention.

Totally agree with Elctro and Ethel. Safety is paramount on the roads today and if there is an accident it is best to be able to show that you were abiding by the law and the Highway Code.

if you drive a mechanicaly propelled vehicle on a public highway you need to abide to the law even if you are representing the law, as no body is above the law the rules are for all

One interesting point not yet covered. You too can use a two way or a CB radio in a car, as the law in question only applies to mobile phones!!!

But of course you could still get prosecuted for 'driving with undue care and attention' if you were caught using such a radio and the police believed they could back it up.

They communicate because they HAVE to. No one else MUST use a mobile phone whilst they are driving.
