I have a standalone DVD recorder that has given up the ghost so I intend to take it back and demand a repair or replacement. It's out of the 12 month guarantee but I intend to exercise my rights under the Sale of Goods Act and am fairly comfortable with how this works (managed to get a new laptop battery out of Dell after 13 months!). I'm prepared for an argument and expect them to try to deny responsibility, but do you think I would be better to physically take it back to the shop or phone customer services (House of Fraser)?
