Is my allocated parking space classed as the 'public highway'?

I own a lease-hold flat and as part of the lease, I have an allocated parking bay. Most of the flats in the Close also have allocated spaces, and these spaces are adjacent to each other, facing the road at 90degrees (cars travelling on the roadway do not need to cross into the parking bays to travel down the road). Being a Close, it's a dead-end at one end, and so we don't have any through traffic. All the parking bays have notices stating 'private parking, number xx'. Is it likely that these parking bays are actually classed as private land belonging to the flats, or would they more likely be classed as part of the public highway, even though the road itself runs in front of the the parking bays?

Could go either way without something more concrete to go on. Private flats here had been up for a number of years with private marked bays. Council extended a controlled parking zone and suddenly the spaces were no longer 'private' and the flat owners had to buy the permits for the zone. Turns out the parking bays never really belonged to the flats as such even although they were marked and everyone believed them so.
Never got the end of the story about any comeback the owners may have had with the original developer, but the private allocated spaces are still integrated into the general parking zone.

OK KenR, thanks very much for that. My concern isn't really whether I actually own the space or not, it is to do with whether council/DVLA/whoever would regard my bay as being on the highway or not, for insurance purposes. I am unable to drive for the forseeable future due to a leg injury, but I don't want to sell the car, and have nowhere else to put it, but I also don't want to pay an insurance premium (which is really high as it's a semi performance car) for the next 6 months+ if I don't have to (crime is virtually zero in our area and so I am not worried about theft).

As you say though, I guess it could go either way, depending on the exact terms of my lease and what the deeds to the property say. Need to do some reading....
