What are squatters rights?

IF you have someone living in your property and they do not have a tenancy agreement or any contract they apparently have squatters rights - but what exactly are these?

Squatters rights - (adverse possession) - only applies where the squatter is there without the owners knowledge or permission.

If they are occupying the property with the owner's permission, they are not squatting.

Thanks Ethel but my friend had a tenant in her property with a contract between the two of them however whilst living their the tenant moved her boyfriend in and they have since split up, the tenant moved out but the boyfriend is refusing to go or pay the rent claiming that since he wasn't named on the contract he now has squatters rights?

They have no rights in the situation you describe.

Squatters rights are there to protect people who live in a property for a very long time from being thrown on to the streets.
