child abuse?
Our head of year has taken to making us stand up during form time in mornings and afternoons, which are 10 and 25 minuets long. he is also planning to take the chairs away as he believes that we talk less when we are standing. surely this will come under some child abuse law?

The behaviour must be quite atrocious for your Head to be so exasperated with all of you. But Im sympathetic with those who are innocent and are being forced to suffer at the hands of those who are causing all the problems. In this case, perhaps the rest of you need to name and shame those individuals who are being so disrespectful.
That is democracy (and justice) in action!
I wish you every success

I knew today's youngsters are said to be unfit but if you can't stand for 25 minutes, there's definitely something wrong with you!
Many employees (particularly those staffing stands at major sales exhibitions) are specifically told by their employers that they must never be seen sitting down by the public. That typically means 10 or 12 hours standing with just one 20 minute break (out of sight of the public). It sounds like your Head of Year is simply providing you with some good work experience ;-)
However, I wonder what on earth your Head of Year finds to do with 25 minutes 'form time' per day. The school I taught in used to have similar 'tutor times'. We found them so pointless that we cut it down to 10 minutes (for registration, notices, etc plus any individual requirements) in the morning and 5 minutes (for registration) in the afternoons. I still found that was too much 'formal' time. (My pupils would talk to me about problems during break times and I'd speak to most of their parents, by phone, several times per term but the 'formal' tutorial system always seemed pointless).
Your Head of Year's decision to remove seating is unusual but it's definitely not abusive. If you were in China or Japan, you'd probably be spending the time in 'physical training' which would be far more arduous (and a lot better for you) than simply standing ;-)

If you are whinging and moaning about standing for 25 minutes now what the hell are you going to do when you have to stand ALL day for 4.5 hours at a time?
Don't ever work in a clothing shop, hairdressers, beauty salon, factory, supermarket, cafe, restaurant ............ the list is endless
Show your elders some respect and try, for once, to do as you are asked when you are asked to do it.
Kids of today do not know how easy they have it - stop whinging

Child abuse?! I am sure the authorities have better things to do than invetsigate a case where a class load of children had to stand for between 10 and 25 minutes, and if anyone was considering reporting this as a case of child abuse to the likes of social services then I hope their conscience would remind them that the time wasted in responding to some lazy teens could have been spent investigating REAL cases of child abuse where children need help, not a kick up the backside for whinging.
daffy654 - its not assembly its form time. register is taken and then we do nothing for 20 mins.
ojread2 - it was a simple question there was no need to start judging the person who asked this question. and fyi i was intending to work in those sort of jobs as i find them all very mundane. i do respect my elders but also know i have the right to say when i feel something may be unfair.
natalie_1982 - i didnt mean child abuse in that context it was a simple question. was this against any human rights laws. etc.
Reverandfunk and karenr110 - quite frankly you can **** off! you have no right what so ever to sit there and judge me and the rest of my family because of a simple question i asked. the question was actually for my friend and he used my account. i am a 6th former and i had frees the next morning and 10:30 at night isnt late anyway. so next time you want to pass such rude judgements on someone you dont even know maybe you should take the care to find a few things out first!!!

The definition of general child abuse is something like
A person over 17 years of age has care, custody or charge of any person under 16 and exposes that person to actions which are likely to hinder development, harm, place in unnecessary danger.
It is something like that anyway. So the flat answer to your question is I believe no laws have been broken.
