my boyfriend divorced his wife 4 years ago. at the time he owned a house, a taxi and a stack of flats. when he got divorced he claims that he lost everything and didn't end up with a penny. even though the ex-wife left with their two children aged 9 and 12, now 13 and 16, i find it hard to believe that the courts would leave him with nothing, even though the house and his properties where all in his name only. your answer could explain why he is slightly wary to commit to me, your help would be appreciated.

because, hes either lying to you about having all of it in the first place or lying he was left with nothing.
I tend to beleive normanthedog - this man is lying. Either about what he had in the first place or what happened.
I also agree with the other two,the man sounds like a fantasist.
Perhaps HE didn't own them ......the BANK did (all mortgaged to the hilt? )

It is possible, though highly unlikely, that your boyfriend would have been given such a settlement. The court must give regard to the property rights AND the respective resources of the parties, and it may be that your boyfriend was thought to be in a position where he could easily begin again. His wife may have had no prospects of a career, no property and, with children to support, the court may have transferred ALL of your boyfriend's property to her. But such settlements are extremely rare. That's the legal part.

I have to say, it does sound as though your boyfriend is reluctant to commit to you. But what you don't say is how long you have both been together for. If he has went through a rather painful or messy divorce it's understandable he may be reluctant to commit again ,and if you have been together for a relatively short time, why would he want to commit. Maybe you're getting a wee bit too heavy? If not, maybe you're just not the girl for him, and in that case, he's not the man for you.
The courts would not have taken his livelihood - the taxi - from him in any divorce circumstances.

He is lying.
