Hi tombstonekid... (brilliant name btw...lol)... unfortunately that rule is not always true... it really depends on what is in your title deeds. I also live in a terraced property and my neighbours and I *share* the ownership of each boundary wall (my left hand side neighbour and I both own the left hand side boundary wall, similarly with the right hand side)..... You need to check the information you got from your solicitor when you bought it - that should tell you who owns what and the extent of your boundary (I am assuming you have a mortgage, so you probably don't have immediate access to the deeds themself).
