Inheritance/Divorce
My brother has just married a woman from the Caribbean (Barbados in fact) who has 2 children from a previous relationship. He has no children. He lives there but is a UK citizen. In the event of his death or divorce, he would like only a minor share of any proceeds owned before his marriage, to pass onto his wife and her children/family, preferring the majority to pass to his own blood relatives, as he and his wife jointly own successful businesses in that country. Bearing in mind the (differing?) laws of the two countries, as well as divorce and probate law generally, can this be done simply by his writing of a new will? If the laws are different (although it is understood that Barbadian law is the same as UK law, having been a British colony in past days) which law overrides which? He has significant assets that were his before he met and married his wife and since his blood relatives invested in and assisted with the building up of these assets, he feels it is fair for them to inherit.
