I have been told by my employer that i am not entitled to double time on bank holidays because i have not been with the company for 13 weeks. He also says i wont get overtime rate. Well the second bits ok i suppose although a bit tight, but i thought it was the law that every body should get double time if they work on bank holidays. Is it right by law what this company is doing. Do they have to pay me extra by law. If i had had the bank holiday off which i couldnt would i off been sacked. I wont to know what the law is and if it was rong that they are not paying me double or time and ahalf for coming in on those days

The majority of the places I have worked didn't pay overtime rate for working a Bank Holiday, it was paid at single time plus you were given a day off in lieu.

Ok thanks,i agree with you,but my employer wont even pay a day in loo. They do not acknowlede me in particular as having any kind of extra benefit for working the bank holiday. They say that i need to be with the company for 13 weeks, this is what they are using to get away with giving me a day in loo etc. Is this right
There is no automatic entitlement either to time off on bank holidays, or to bonus pay.

Your employer can pay you only your standard rate of pay if they so choose, and can also require you to work on bank holidays without giving any time off in lieu.

The only rule is that they have to give you the equivalent of 4.8 weeks off in annual leave (which if you work five days a week is 24 days). This can be made up of bank holidays, so that each bank holiday you have off comes out of your annual holiday allowance.

Normally, most employers will give some kind of bonus, either extra pay or additional time off, as a thank-you gesture, but they aren't obliged to.

It takes one to know one noknowledge,

Mind your own Biz.
You should have been given your rates of pay when you started, or you should have asked for them. Either way, by the end your first month you should have been given a "statement of particulars" which would include pay, holidays etc.
