can i be chased for a debt from 12 years ago

Yes you can, debts never disappear.

If you have had no contact with the creditor for 6 years or more, they cannot take you to court UNLESS you have moved and failed to inform them of your new address.

If that is the case, the Statute of Limitations doesn't apply and you can taken to court at any time.

However, if you haven't moved or have kept them up to date with your new contact details they are allowed to ask you to pay but can't start a court action.

If, in the last 6 years you have written to them or telephoned them then court action can be taken.
i think for mortgage debts the same applies but it's 12 years
No you can't be chased for a debt 6 years old or more. If you haven't heard from the company then it is statute barred. If you've suddenly received a letter saying you owe money, do not acknowledge the debt. either contact citizens advice or check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk.
