Our neighbour put up a fence at our cottage...this is not just cottage land lots of people live up there all year around. The fence is about 10ft high.Also he made the side facing his property all nicely stained and no supports showing. facing our property are steel poles and cross supports and did not even stain the fence it is very unattractive. is there any law that requires the fence to be suitable facing the neighbours property. I think there is a height requirement.. my concern is having to look at the unattractive fence is devalues out property.

Not sure about the height but there is no law stating that the 'good' side of a fence has to face the neighbour! If I paid loads of money for a fence I would want to be looking at the good side as well.

There is nothing to stop you erecting your own fence on your property with the good side facing you.

Yes there is a high requirement- 2m or 6ft6inches.
If it's higher than this contact your planning department at your local council.

They dont have to have nice side facing you, but I think you have the right to paint the side facing you, if it sits on a boundary line.

You never have the right to paint the fence - you have to get permission from the owner of the fence first.

Nor should you attach or affix anything to the fence without permission.

A fence of that height needs planning permission - speak to your council
