i lent a so called friend of mine my x box when i asked for it back he said that it had broken and he had thrown it away i dont believe him what can i do has he broken the law

As a gesture of good will he should offer to replace it but of course if he hasnt offered then he obviously is no friend of yours. As the law stands unless you have proof that he had it off you in the first place, it would be a case of your word against his. You could threaten him with court action but this will probably cost you money. Your probably best to write the xbox off as well as your so called friend and use it as experience to not lend your stuff out again.
