Speeding fine query

My dad has just received the above and it claims he was doing 50mph in a 40 mph zone. He truthfully feels he wasn't doing that speed and I must admit I have never known him speed before. Is there any way these cameras can be wrong or does that just sound like a total copout?! It was just an overhead camera on a dual carriageway and there were no signs or anything. I always thought there had to be now? Anyway the notice is from the police and he just has to confirm he was the driver and give them his license details before they decide what to do next. What is that supposed to mean? Sorry but we are new to this having being law abiding citizens ha ha! Any advice on this would be greatly received thankyou.

Is your dad absolutely sure his car speedometer is still accurate? They can go off I believe.

I don't think your dad will be offered the option of going on a 'speed awareness course'. the reported speed has to be within a certain limit and I think 50 in a 40 area will take him beyond that limit

The usual criteria for the offer of a speed awareness course (SAC) is 10% + 6 above the speed limit and the offer of one is discetionary(?) and cannot be demanded as a 'right'

I've recieved my date now and it is called a Driver Awareness Course (not speed) just for those who would like to know.

As per my link, these courses are part of the Speed Awareness Scheme which is itself a constituent of the Driver Improvement Scheme.

Mine's called a Speed Awareness Workshop and it's run by the local road safety unit (county council). I think it depends where you are and who's running them as to what they're actually called.
