Dogs in eating establishments
I ask this question out of interest, yesterday I was in a village pub which has two bars, one that is used as a restaurant the other used as the public bar where dogs are allowed,
a party of four people came in wanting lunch and was told that the restaurant was full but a table may become free in about half an hour or so the people said they did not mind having their lunch in the public bar to save waiting to which the landlady said OK, the lunches were served to their table but a few minuets later a local guy walked in with his dog, the people that were eating complained saying dogs are not allowed in any eating area to which the landlady replied ''dogs are not allowed in the restaurant side but have always been allowed in the public bar'' the people left threatening to report the pub to hygiene standards. So who was right?

While I am interested in all forms of life as part of the world we live in, I don't want to have the smaller members of that family (parasites or pathogens) randomly but deliberately mixed in with my food or its immediate surroundings. If a place is known to allow animals on its premises then I will choose not to eat anything within such a space. The people described in the story may genuinely not have realised that the UK has less than strict rules/practices on hygiene (and suffers absurd outbreaks as a result, viz infection rates in hospitals, e-coli outbreaks, etc.). They may just possibly have been trying it on, although the fact that they originally intended to eat in the restaurant suggests not.
It is of course a fact that those households that have cats and/or dogs routinely resreve their kitchen as the one room where the animals are most likely to be accommodated. To those who think about hygiene, the kitchen thus potentially becomes a greater health risk than the bathroom. I once read a report of a scientific UK study into toxocara canis where (now understanding its spread and effect) the authors said they would not sit on a bus seat if they knew it had been previously occupied by a dog. That parasite is responsible for childhood blindness and other ills - the study found its eggs were at the time ubiquitous in public areas in Britain. By the way, I am as flattered as anyone else by the fawning of dogs and other animals, but I draw a certain line as to how I mix with them.

I found all of your comments most interesting and I have to say I honestly thought that it was illegal to take dogs into premises where food is served (although I am a lover of animals) I would think twice about eating at a restaurant that allowed dogs to roam around the tables where people were eating. I also find it strange that most food shops display signs saying No Dogs Allowed (except guide dogs) ? whilst I have the utmost sympathy & respect for blind people a dog is a dog so why is it OK to take an animal into a restaurant but not a food shop?
The law only requires operators of such businesses as restaurants to have 'adequate procedures in place' to prevent domestic animals getting access to areas where is prepared, handled or stored, said the Food Standards Agency, about a a restaurant which had refused entry to a man with a guide dog. It's a common misconception that restaurants etc must not allow dogs in because of some hygiene or environmental health law said Environmental Health [what a great name for a band LOL] of the same incident..
I recently acquired my hygiene certificate and whilst doing my course the subject of cleanliness naturally came up. I was rather surprised to hear the tutor say what I have been saying for years, we are becoming "over clean" everything now has to be so clean that our bodies no longer build up the antibodies to deal with slight infections,
Ive worked out the field as a tree surgeon, Ive spent 13 years as a pest controller, I must have consumed vast amounts of these dodgy bacteria, I obviously need to be more careful in my present job in a care home. I am totally convinced that if we stopped pussy footing around with food we would all be better protected with our own defence mechanism. Incidentally, it is very rare I'm off work with any illness, i very rarely get colds or any other illness. My home and kitchen is clean but I'm sure you would find plenty of bacteria if you looked.
When im working in my garden or as today im putting a new roof on a shed, I wont wash my hands to eat, I will probably consume many millions of bacteria, will I suffer? No I wont.
Do you think a farmer washes his hands when he is out working in the field, no, he just swills them off in the cows trough!!!

i think it depends on the behaviour of the dog an the dogs owner...if the dogs was hanging round the table, under it etc expecting to get tidbits an the owner just let it then id be peeved too...
for some reason many dog owners seem to think its absolutely fine to let their dogs do whatver they want an dont seem to realise that not everyone loves their dog, or even likes them...
it drives me mad when thoughtless owners just stand there gazing lovingly at their dog while it jumps up at me, rubs itself on me or even on 2 occasions jumped into my car and also ran through my front door...not even getting that the look on my face was not saying it was fine at all.
