Royal wedding bank holiday.

My wife works for Tesco and she said she's been told that they won't be getting an extra day off for the royal wedding.
I said that as it has been declared a bank holiday by the goverment then they can't refuse the employees an extra day off, they are entitled to it or a day off in lieu.
Can anyone confirm this?

hi, get her to ask for a copy of her contract, or colleague hand book, if that says paid day off for bank holidays then its a paid day off. it will also depend on her length of sevice,

I would also be tempted to call head office. normally supermarkets offer double time or time and a half for bank holidays, thats how they get staff to work them. it may be a manager gone power crazy and making stuff up.

Obviously many people will have to work, but those that do may reasonably expect extra pay or time off in lieu, but as has been said, this is not obligatory, depending on the actual wording of the contract. 28 days is to cover BH entitlement in a normal year but does not cater for extra ones, which are up to the employer. I suspect we will be hearing this again next year regarding the extra BH for the Diamond Jubilee.
