Secretary (spoilers? maybe?)

Hopefully someone can clear up some confusion for me.  When the girl goes for the interview she sees the previous secretary crying.  Later in the film, just as she's being fired there's a flash back to the old secretary in tears.  Is this because the boss (sorry, I've forgotten all the names ^_^) did the same thing, administered the same punishments to both of them and they both got too attached?

I watched this film last weekend and I am assuming the same as you.  That was my impression that the other secretary got attached to.  I thought it was a good film, but a bit strange.
