What will happen to these captured Somali pirates, will it be the UK's responsibility to send them for trial, or will they be turned over to the Somalian authorities?

I suspect that if they were captured in international waters they will inevitably ask for some sort of asylum, the UK will become embroiled in some human rights fiasco involving the UN and inevitably EU law will require us to provide shelter for them in the form of council housing.

Not that I'm cynical about such matters......
free three bottles of water, a machine gun, box of chocolates and released.....
What do you call three Somali Pirates in a lifeboat ?
-Snap Crackle n' Pop.

What did one Somali pirate say to the other Somali pirate?
-I can't take the stress of this job. I feel like my head is going to explode!
Philtaz, if so that makes two of us.
Who's to say they are pirates? They may well be refugees fleeing from the anarchy of their homeland.
Did we ever hear whatever happened to that disabled woman who they kidnapped?
according to this, she died.

sandyroe, somali refugees don't carry machine guns, and ride in inflatable craft that go faster than most Navy vessels.

indeed, didn't the gunmen on board a flight do exactly the same, held hostages, then claimed asylum, i remember the story a while back.
I'm a hard bitch - throw them over the side.
Maggie, i'm not, but i agree. I posted before that i had seen footage of the Russian Navy, special ops perhaps, who handcuffed pirates to their own boat, after they had kidnapped a Russian ship, let's say the pirates didn't get off their boat.
The Russians know how to deal with kidnappers.

I remember at the time of the Terry Waite et al kidnappings in the ME, a similar fate befell a Russian diplomat. A story subsequently emerged that the KGB, who knew the kidnappers (it was an open secret apparently) retorted by kidnapping a young, prominent male of one the kidnappers family.
After a week of negotiations the KGB sent a testicle from their 'detainee' to the family involved.
Both parties received their goods back within hours, but obviously one was minus a small part of his anatomy but otherwise safe and well.

That's how you negotiate with kidnappers!
some might consider that barbaric, but piracy should have been stamped on years ago, by all countries, then perhaps we wouldn't have deaths, kidnap, ransom, murder even by these men. It's all going to the drug lords, so the sooner the navies of the world turn this round the better.
Some say barbaric em, I say it's alpha males showing who has got (literally) the cojones to see it through!

You don't negotiate with these people, you use every means at your disposal to get your people back, end of.
I don't think there any such thing as 'somalian authorities' to turn them over to. They might as well let them go, otherwise we'll end up paying to keep them somehow.
There was a theocratic Islamic regime which was starting to extend its authority over Somalia. But the Americans worked to destabilize it, fearing it would be a supporter of terrorism.
In their eyes, the continuing chaos there, and the piracy on the high seas, is apparently a price worth paying when considering the wider security picture.
As long as they don't bring them back here. We know they will get a few months inside and then claim asylum.
Those captured by the RN have been handed over to the Kenyans, Some captured by the German Navy were prosecuted in Hamburg.
Depends upon who captures them. If captured by the Federal German Navy, they are tried in Hamburg, if by the Royal Navy, they are handed over to the Kenyans.
