Do i need a TV license if i use a handheld TV, you know, one of those casio jobbies that run on batteries?

If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) you need a TV license.

You can use a TV set powered by its own internal batteries away from your main residence without the need of a separate TV Licence.

If you have a static caravan, mobile home or moveable chalet, and it has a TV which is used at the same time as a TV set is being used in your main licensed home - you'll need a separate licence to cover your second home.

However, if the TV in your static caravan or mobile home is never in use at the same time as your TV at your main home, you don't need a separate licence. But you do need to complete a declaration form.

If it is capable of receiving television pictures, then the answer is yes, you do need a television licence. For example, even if you just own a video recorder you also need a licence, as it can transmit television signals although what you would do with a video recorder without a television set is beyond anyone... Mind you after the Royal Wedding and the news coverage of the Pope Benedict XVI's inauguration I think that we've got our money's worth of the licence fee so far this year.

I actually own a handheld television (I got it for Christmas) and I'm going to take it on holiday with me soon.
