Are all railway stations exciting?

I was thinking about coming home on the train. You get off the train, and there's something atmospheric about the high, echoey station, which smells like the town, and the sounds of the town are echoing around it. You feel a little thrill, no matter how many times you do it.

And there are seagulls, or maybe pigeons at some stations.

Do we ever grow out of being a little bit excited by railway stations?

And no, I haven't been watching re-runs of The Railway Children.

When your train is late, yes you do
You obviously have never been in the Dundee station JJ. Dirty, smelly and long overdue a makeover. However, our whole waterfront area is being developed and I believe this may happen. Maybe not in my lifetime though lol.
I can remember jumping up and down "like a ferret on a twig" to use my Dad's expression of impatience, waiting for our train. I'd watch for it coming round the curve and into sight, but as soon as it got quite close I'd hide behind my Dad 'cos it was so noisy. We travelled loads on the train between Crewe and North Wales and I LOVED it LOVED it LOVED it. I loved the mesh luggage racks, the lovely pictures in the carriages, and going into the buffet on the station. Of course it was still steam then - not QUITE the same these days.
We love hopping on and off at station when we visit london, especially liverpool St. love the hustle and bustle , but dont like the pidgeons that hang around.
9 out of ten have either one foot or mangled feet due to the spikes!
Would be superb if they were all steam railways stations though.
MMM the smell.
I agree that some are interesting buildings, not sure I'd call them exciting though and my local one definitely not.

"you obviously have never been in the Dundee station JJ"

Well, no, I haven't. But I've had Dundee cake, and Dundee marmalade, so I'm almost a local.
It's easy enough for me to drive to my sisters in London and park but sometimes when I go I get the train just because it's a little bit exciting.

I think it's probably different if you have to use one for a daily commute though.

puss ...

There used to be quite a jolly sushi bar on the top level at Liverpool Street. Maybe it's still there. It was nice to sit and graze, and then dash down for the train at the last minute.

I wonder where I was going from Liverpool Street. I can't remember.

D97 ... that's a lovely station. It looks like a little model.

EB ...

Yes, a bit exciting.

I get the train about once a week, so not really a commuter. It still feels a bit indulgent to sit on the train with a big coffee, and a danish.
It does depend on the station - Coventry is boring, Euston is utterly vile, but St Pancras is stunning & uplifting now :)
... and I am still struggling with an image of JJ waving her red bloomers at the train ;-)

You're right Dave. My arrival station Marylebone. I like getting a hot sausage roll and sitting on the round bench in the middle just watching what's going on. But standing in a grave yard would be more entertaining that at my departure station at Princes Risborough.

Dave ...

You're right ...

Euston is horrid. Aren't they planning to knock it all down some time?

St P is VERY jolly ... the champagne bar is fab.

Not been to Coventry.
Mmm, nice railway stations, but not this one.. Dover!!

Question Author
The thing I like about Marylebone, EB, is that it's in an area that seems as though it shouldn't really have a railway station.

It's like ... Whooa, who put that station there ????
Question Author
Nibble ... maybe that's not the most flattering angle?
