Because Jean (the one with mental health problems) got the sack from the coking job at the Queen Vic but he kept his despite being newer and not being family? (Just guessing as I haven't watched it yet).

I don't know exactly why but he seems to know she is easily led. I expect she will be part of his grand scheme. I will still love him though.
