saw a bit of this film the other night, the bit where he wakes from the hospital and wanders over westminster bridge and thru a deserted city centre and it left me wondering how they did this ? its not just the fact that its deserted and eerily quiet but also all the litter, damage, missing persons notes etc etc.obviously it was filmed very early in the morning but even so its still spooky to watch!

anyone know how ?

Like you said - early in the morning.  Same with most deserted city scenes in films.  They would have placed all the litter and then cleaned it up afterwards.  The damage - well, i can't remember exactly what was damaged as it's a while since I saw it, but a fair bit may have been done on the computer.

I agree - bloomin spooky.  Mind you, I got totally freaked out the other week when Big Ben stopped! Ooo-er!

Obsolutely right - early morning shoot and stop the traffic. Films rarely get to stop the traffic in London but this one did it. Also you will notice that some shots are quite hazy - I am sure they did some editing to block out lights etc.

I remember hearing that they used scantily clad ladies to hold the pedestrians back, apparently it's far more effective than big blokes in black jackets!

If I can remember correctly, they had approximately 10 minutes at the crack of dawn every day for about 3 weeks (might be more, might have been less).  The same goes for the scenes on the M1 when it is completely empty, only about 10 minutes in total each day to flim it.
On the DVD extras it shows you how they did it
I heard the biggest problem were the drunks that stagger about the cities in the small hours trying to find their way home!
