Bt Vision

BT Vision changed a few weeks ago and now I find I'm really struggling with it. I only use it to record programmes, and have the subtitles option on. This weekend the subtitles kept going out of sinc(is that the right term) with the picture; this has happened quite a few times.
Also when I record The Archers, which I do every day, it cuts off before the final few words.
I contacted BT and received a very terse reply saying that recording is 'a service not a right'.
I thought I would get a Freeview box from my local TV suppliers but they said it would cost over £200 - I got the BT box free when I signed up to Vision.
Advice would be appreciated.

A basic Freeview set-top box (without a recording facility) shouldn't cost more than twenty quid:
