shakespeare in love. though that's a while ago now I
Rita, Sue & Bob Too.
full monty
Trainspotting
shipstabber you have made my day.  that film is hilarious and scarily close to the bone!  also reminds me of my sisters fashion sense in the 80's.   classic
Ken Loach has always set out to portray the culture and society of the time, so you will do no worse than to show something like My Name Is Joe, Ladybird Ladybird, Sweet Sixteen, or Ae Fond Kiss as a few examples. Or, depending on how old your students are, and whether you yourself can stomach it, Thomas Clay's The Great Ecstacy of Robert Carmichael is perfectly accurate and mature for such a young director, but it is extremely violent and upsetting. You might strugle to get hold of this though, I'm not sure it's picked up a distributor yet, it played at Cannes this year.

Nil by mouth - gritty london working class film

Yasmin, which was a film shown on C4 last year I thought was a very good film

Depends how old your students are!!

not a film but what about the royal family (caroline ahern and ricky tomlinson)

we're 'avin a gangbang we're 'avin a larf - a classic shipstabber

I would suggest:

24 hour party people - for the how they live oop north

Nil by mouth - for how they live dan saf

or any Carry on Film for how we used to live

The Matrix
The Krays
..twin town- (from the welsh Abers)
Kes
..thought of another one which has a fab opening sequence of "new " thriving industrial city of Shefield during the 70s, and the grim reality of unemployment today..."the full monty"... depends on the age of your students though!
What about "About a Boy"?

Britain's education system-'If...'

the British justice system-'O Lucky Man!'

the Health care system-'Britannia Hospital'

also 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning', 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner', 'This Sporting Life'

or maybe you should try some James Bond movie, for a wee bit more realistic approach.

And yes, RE: James Bond, I would strongly recomend 'Licence to Kill' (very educational title).

How about the Mike Leigh film Secrets and Lies, starring Timothy Spall & Brenda Blethyn.

Oh Kes - what a superb film.

What about

Billy Elliot
Educating Rita
To Sir With Love
Shooting Fish
Human Traffic
Octavius, try:

"We're having a gang bang, we're having a ball, we're having a gang bang against the wall."

Superb film!
