a) there is no guarantee one will find problems with someone's past when checked. b) even if something is found it is always a case of who you know and whether they will keep the "secret" quiet.

Take a moment to consider just how many awards are given in each honours list, plus those awards that aren't listed. Then consider how much it would cost the tax payer for each of those individuals to be vetted prior to receiving their award.

Do you really think that would be a wise use of tax payers money and resources?

Honours can be revoked. There was a case a few years back of a headmistress who was made a Dame, later to be convictied of embezzlement. Her damehood was revoked.

The difficulty is that as both people are now dead, despite what has come to light, they have not been convicted of any offence.
