Does anyone else notice the sound is out of time with the video on Freeview channels? Digital certainly isn't the way forward if you ask me...

Er, no! The broadcasters ensure that it's in sync when it leaves their studios. The transmitter owners ensure that it's in sync when it leaves their transmitters. So that suggests that your TV (or set top box) can't process the video data as fast as the audio data (or, of course, vice versa).
Sony has a sound setting that allows you to alter the sound delay/advance the sound in front of the picture by AV input. Have you looked through your TV settings to see if it has similar? Adjusting this might eliminate the problem.

I was thinking cheap telly or box but it's a Panasonic with built in digital, not cheap !
I will check the manual for delay settings, cheers.
I've had a similar problem in the past .... I found that simply changing channels, or switching off the box and then back on, rectified the problem. When I say switch off, I mean completely power down and then power back up.
