Anyone else think that the 'detective' series Vera is one big yarn?

All right it ticks all the diversity boxes, black actors, disable actor, Muslim actor mixed marriage, etc.

But it is so slow and boring, and 'Vera's' voice and shabby clothes, what can one say? except it takes up 2 hours of peak viewing time.

Columbo, Bradley Walsh in Law and Order, Di Frost,Shoestring PI, Rebus, all scruffy but great shows.

As I said, Mama, I only half-watched half an episode but it seemed to conform to the awful stereotypes that are foisted on us today.
Super efficient computer expert- in wheelchair=TICK
Suspiciously young but brilliant pathologist- black=TICK
Wise, patient, indulgent lead detective, handily blessed with foresight- woman= TICK

Now. Corner-cutting, disorganised, unpunctual side-kick who always jumps to the wrong conclusion- young white male=TICK (Incidentally, not that I'll ever watch it again but I feel it only fair to warn you, there might be some totally inappropriate loving going on with the last two named. I do hope for your sakes I'm wrong.)
The half episode I watched, the deranged killer when they found him was an ex-copper (cos they was all crooks in dem days, innit)- very white( Ukip sort of chap)= TICK

Well, your half watched half episode must have been a big let down - what a shame.

I care not what skin colour/ability/disability or gender the actors are - I care that the scripts are good and the roles well played.

Just to drift from topic slightly. There does seem to be more disabled people working in the public sector. I know that will be because they have to fulfill a quota. But, are they employed because they are disabled or because they are the best person for the job?

One would sincerely hope the latter Dave, with better physical accessibility etc it is far easier for many previously debarred from work to carry out jobs now.

dave, i don't think its so much about quota as it is about making it possible. Its now the law that buildings and facilities have to be accessible to people with mobility problems. Hitherto they may well have been the best person for the job but would have been ruled out by lack of access to the building or to facilities within the building, provision of suitable loos etcetera. Around 15 years ago, as an Occupational Therapist, I was asked to comment on changes being made to an NHS Hospital's admin areas. I, and others, pointed out that in the new plans, there was no access for people with limited disability, let alone wheelchair users, and the toilets and corridors were not suitable and we were told that the hospital couldn't afford to do that and didn't have to!

No one has mentioned the non-talking, back-ground Muslim stand-in, why was this necessary?

And wouldn't it make a change to see a black criminal instead of the usual hard done by black characters, or the black wayward character who in the end turns out good.

didn't notice the Muslim stand in AOG and the white teenaged girl was pretty hard done by too, also the white bloke whose white son was killed in the crane accident.

Sigh - I marvel sometimes how anyone can concentrate on a plot whilst tallying up the ethnicity and/or other aspects of the characters.

I occasionally am grateful for my paucity of sight.
