Can someone tell me what it means when firms 'sponsor' a TV programme, like Cadbury's and Coronation Street? Thanks.

The sponsors pay the tv companies large sums of money to have their products advertised on particular programmes.  For example, Airwick on Emmerdale and Cadbury's on Coronation Street.
They also get a mini ad before during and after the show, like the chocolate cat for Corrie.
