To be fair, it's not strictly a 'European' competition but one for EBU members and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has been an Associate Member of the EBU since 1950.

I agree that those 3 countries offered good enough Eurovision fare, but Poland in 2nd with UK voters & Ukraine winning overall was frankly astonishing to my way of thinking.
