I phoned them to say I wished to cancel my contract which runs from April 23rd 2017 to April 22nd 2018 . They said I could not cancel as it was too much in advance and they would not accept until February 2018.
So what is the legal position as if you take out a contract for a year that is exactly when it means and not a year and a day .So why should you have to give notice. This seems to be a con trick by nearly all companies in the communications field
Yes if you take out a contract normally that would be binding, otherwise there'd be no point.
There is nothing to stop you cancelling your direct debit if that is how you pay, but as Bazile says you'll be liable for some penalty, not unreasonably.
What it means gollob is that it is too early right now, for them to offer you a new deal. Come February they will be trying to persuade you to stay. I get BT sports 1&2 free with my broadband.
I do not think you understand what I am saying
If I have a contract for a year why do I have to cancel it Once the year is up that is the end of the contract so why do I have to give notice
If I take out car insurance for a year I do not have to phone then to say I wish to cancel at the end of the year-This is done automatically
Yes I do understand. Your contract runs out in April. You do not want to renew it. But instead of just letting it expire, you for some "reason" want to give BT 6 months notice that you will not be renewing???? Can't blame em. Why should their systems have to be set up to accommodate such. What next? Sign a 12 month contract and give them "notice" the next day that you will not be renewing?
"If I take out car insurance for a year I do not have to phone then to say I wish to cancel at the end of the year-This is done automatically "
In theory yes but in practice you'll get reminders about renewal from at least your original insurance broker.
And as Togo says you'll no doubt also get reminders and offers from BT as well. They won't let you go without a fight, but I must confess to being confused by what it is you are complaining about.
Why would BT Sport be interested in your telling them 4 months in advance that you are going to cancel? And indeed from your point of view it might be better to leave it because what if you forget to check that it had been done?
