My niece is getting married next year, I'm delighted she's met someone nice.

However, she's insisting everyone must wear a hat to the wedding.

My thoughts keep swinging from just doing it as its their day and not doing it as I'm not sure I like being told what I must wear.

What are your thoughts?

I'd personally wear a hat or not go, it's clearly something very important to her for some reason, plus I like hats, any excuse for a hat... but I totally get not liking being told what to wear as well x
10 years ago I wouldn't have dreamt of not wearing a hat to a wedding so I'd do as she asks.
Yes, wear a hat....and nothing else. That'll teach her.....!
What would she do if you didn't wear one?
Why don't you take the hat, wear it for the photographs, then bin it.
I hate hats...and won't wear them.

Maybe a fascinator...
I personally wouldn't, I hope I'm never asked.
Not everyone suits a hat, what will she do if half her invited guests decide they don't suit a hat?
Yes. You could wear a fascinator. There are some pretty little ones available and they are not expensive. A colour in it to match the dress you'll be wearing or a colour to match your shoes.
There was a time when it was de rigueur for a woman to wear a hat, especially in church. Alas times have changed.
Have you asked her why she's so insistent on it?
Do as you are told........wear a hat and stop moaning.

I don't really mind wearing it but I just don't like her telling me how to dress, as long as we look decent and well turned out (which of course we will) and as Ummm says I don't think she would stop me going if I didn't wear it.

I know I'll end up towing the line and wearing one just to please her.
I bet sqad is...bald??
I'm of the view guests shouldn't be good what to wear, these occasions are expensive enough.
pasta.......LOL...LOL
* told *
I've a flat cap you can borrow.

Hubby is joking that might just be the weekend we are away! Seriously thinking about it!
It's not really like being told what to wear in a despotic sense though is it? I can see no difference in this to invites that say morning dress, wear pink, no black at funerals, no jeans or trainers, come in 70s gear yada yada.... I expect she wants a traditional smart wedding.
