How buttock clenching was Neil Diamond? Even the audience failed to respond to his prompting to 'touching hands' and at times he seemed to forget the words he has been singing for far too many years.

Such a shame when this happens to a great performer. I remember seeing a TV showing of the late Glen Campbell on his last tour.He started by apologising for the presence of his daughter on stage explaining she was there to prompt him should he forget his words.Despite a few slips he turned in his usual fine performance and received a well earned ovation at the end of it.
Neil Diamond has always been famous for two things - the first and least important is the terrible toupees he still wears even now, and the second, and most important, is his incredible reputation as a live performer. His concerts are legendary and his fans adore him, as you could see here.
In terms of the 'touching hands' bit, everywhere else with the exception of the UK, people are far more tactile, and have no issue with grabbing the hand of the stranger next to them.
Over here you can't grab the hand of someone you are not engaged to, it's simply not the done thing.
