Carrier Bags-5P Charge

On the Wright Stuff today they were talking the prospect of the 5p carrier bag charge going up to 10p shortly, following the huge success it has been . What are your thoughts of this happening, or do you thing the charge should be even higher still.? Apparently if/when this is to come into operation then smaller corner shops etc will no longer be exempt as they are at the moment.

Personally I have no problem , have never had to pay for one since the charge came in - I can see occasions when it could be a little awkward for some but overall a good thing.

5p/10p. it's not really a deal-breaker is it?
We always have a shopping bag or three in back of car so won't be affected.

If it was up to me, I would charge £1 per bag. Why cant people take their own bags to the shop?

Me too, Baldric. Trouble is they are usually still in the back of the car when I get to the checkout!

It's great to discourage unnecessary plastic, but if it's already a huge success, why does it need to be changed?

I prefer used cardboard boxes instead of carrier bags as I unload shopping into car boot.

I noticed that in my local morrisons that fruit bags are once again been made of paper instead of plastic and there is the option to bring ur own plastic containers for fresh fish etc. Definietly a step in the right direction.

If I set out to go food shopping I always take my bags for life with me, other times I always have a couple of carrier bags with me if I should need them

In some parts of the UK they're not already. (e.g. small shopkeepers in Wales have to charge for single-use carrier bags).

Most of the larger supermarkets have already abolished single-use carrier bags, so changing the price charged for them seems to be largely irrelevant.

I at least try to double up on all my plastics. Its like peeing in the ocean I know but just trying to save where I can. My empty bread wrappers double up as food wrappers for my sons work sandwiches. My empty plastic cartons of hummus double up for chopped fruit containers when I need snacks on the go etc. Really wish that plastics were more restricted. I live in a high rise with no recycling facilities...everything just goes in a skip. An insane amount of plastic fills it each week.

When I was a lad most stores sold paper carrier bags with string handles (not a good idea if it was raining). They cost 2d, 19p at today's prices, so nothing to get worked up about.

Morrisons staff are already complaining about the new paper bags because the 'transparent' windows are not clear enough, so they have to open them to see the correct contents.

I was thinking of 50p but I will go with Nailit....I have seen the difference no plastic bags has made in Ireland....and I long to see the end to the litter of plastic bags we still see in this country...x

Abolish the cheap thin ones altogether and just have Bags for Life available at 50p each.

The Co-Op used to do degradable bags. I put put some stuff in a carrier bag, left it in a bedroom and forgot all about it. Months later, I was moving stuff in the bedroom and picked up the bag by the handles. The contents stayed where they were and wee bits of plastic went all over the place.

I was not a happy bunny...
