I'm not unknowledgeable about world war 1, but after watching WW1 in colour it makes you wonder what we really have to complain about, ( including myself ) it brings one back down to earth, for what we take for granted. Well worth watching if you can stand it?

goodness knows how this sensible and thoughtful post got dragged so far off course; I apologise for my part in it. I thought They Shall Not Grow Old was a remarkable film.

There's a lovely evocation of the war-stained landscapes of WWI in a short story, if you can call it that, by Saki. Does that ring a bell with anyone? And can you remember what it's called?

Saki, of course, was one of its millions of victims.
last words "Put that bloody cigarette out!"
Fab last words aren't they, when it's not you.
Sadly the origin of the superstition of accepting a third light in a group of smokers in the trenches. :-(
1. Enemy's attention is drawn to the lucifer being ignited.
2. Takes a bead
3. Pulls the trigger ,aiming just behind the flame, and that's how the poor old Tommy Atkins quit smoking.. :-(
My Grandad told me that story, Retro. I know it was true because he was there.
Tilly
I don't doubt it.

Thanks for your comments, however I was only referring to the 1st ww. when millions of men were sent / forced over the trenches to be shot almost immediately, most of them did not volunteer to go to war.

As regards to the armed forces in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan and such like since, I have just as much respect for them for keeping our land free of invading armies, however men and women choose it as a career, they are not forced to do so, if you join the armed forces, you must expect to go to war at some time.

Agreed ^^
I second that
Teacake's post has been treated with disrepect by some posters.
