//Diversity was at the heart of this Last Night of the Proms programme. The concert opened with a new work, by Daniel Kidane, called Woke, and the first half was dominated by the music of black and female composers.
In the second half, mezzo Jamie Barton, a self-professed “queer girl with a nose ring”, wore a gown in the colours of the bisexual Pride flag and waved a rainbow flag for Rule Britannia! The Proms is clearly in the vanguard for inclusivity, although the fact that Kidane stood out as one of the only BAME members of the audience suggests there is still a long way to go.//

For me, this has always been a wonderful night of tradition celebrating our country and its people – all of them – but this year it was about ‘diversity’ – and … cough…. ‘woke’*. How disappointing to see the soloist waving a Rainbow flag to Rule Britannia. Does she not realise that the Union flag represents us all - or is it simply that she feels her foibles take precedence over everything else, tradition included? Whoever gave the go-ahead for this hi-jacking should get his/her brains tested but sadly brain-testing at the BBC doesn't seem to happen any more. The BBC just can’t seem help itself of late. I feel the off switch approaching in future.
*’Woke’? No, me neither - so I looked it up. It means ‘alert to injustice in society, especially racism.’ Now we know. :o/
Naomi sits back and waits for the onslaught. How very dare anyone criticise 'diversity'? :o)
