Masks/Sainsburys

Earlier on I was in Sainsburys - around 8.30pm or 9 so it was fairly empty. Picked up about 4 items and sorta went straight to a girl who didn't seem to have any customers. She was wearing a mask and I was too. As I was putting my items on the counter - the assistant said a man wanted me.

I turned and a foreign man wearing a mask was flailing his hands and obviously saying something behind the mask and pointing to his trolley. I was pretty like upset and asked the assistant did she know what he was saying - she said he was saying I jumped the queue.

Genuinely I never saw him but obviously he must have been up an aisle - out of sight of me - I loaded my items back to the basket and stood back.

Now this face covering is beginning to get me down, so I am going to have a badge saying I lipread. Even when the young lads (assistants) were helping me - they'd masks and one of them couldn't understand what I was saying - I had to apologise for having a speech impediment and then he was able to show me the item.

I came out very upset at something that wasn't even my doing.

Very upsetting, a badge or a card to show might indeed make you feel a bit more confident Jenny.
A true gentleman!! Why not make up a card saying that you lip read, put it in a plastic cover in your bag and show it to shop assistant etc. if you have a problem or need help

I have just ordered one on Ebay as I now realise I need it. And if it works will buy some more - you know to go on to different coats.
It should go some way to helping,I've had a card since I was registered partially sighted - I rarely have to use it and when I showed it to one nice gentleman who complained I had bumped into him,he replied'What do you want - a medal?', but he was the exception and you'll always get those.

Don't worry about it,jj. I'm sure your not the only one that's happened to. The badge idea is a good one.
That can happen to anyone jj. Don't let it get you down.
The other week I too was in Sainsbury's. I indicated to a man that I was in the queue...he misunderstood and thought I'd indicated he could go ahead, which he did. I was left muttering under my breath.
Doh, I could have swore that she said you go first ;-)
I assisted a blind lady negotiate our chemists one way system yesterday, her guide dog couldn't understand it either. Helped her cross the road when she got her meds and they were on there way.
I don't quite follow

Why did you need to ask the assistant what the fella was saying ?

How does lip reading help when other people are masked up ?
In Tesco you can ask for a lanyard/badge type thing which says you have an invisible disability like deafness or speech impediment.
Must be tough, JJ. My husband is partially deaf and gets angry when people don’t give him enough slack.
Cloverjo. they also have these lanyards in Sainsburys. They are mostly green with sunflowers on them. I know because I have one. Most people don't know what they are though.

I came out very upset at something that wasn't even my doing.

Well you did jump the queue. You have be careful in supermarkets as the queue seems to back up the aisles.

The best way is to walk down the middle lane and look down each aisle for the least queue.

will do next time Sparkly
Bazile - JJ is deaf so can't lip read when people are wearing masks.
Perhaps it's Sod's law, but I have always found that if I join the shortest queue it takes longer to clear than the others.

you're right Jack - but because the shop was so empty - obviously one aisle open but I didn't see him and there was nobody behind him He startled me when he started flailing his arms. My goodness - what a state he got in to.
I wouldn't beat yourself up over it, I'm sure this happens all the time.
Jj. It much be very difficult for you to cope when people are wearing face coverings. Wear your badge in a prominent place . Good luck .
