Us Television Is Spoiling Me ....

... for anything else. I loved the previous series of Marcella ... but having recently watched Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and then going on to the latest Marcella, all I find is mundane and unexciting. Anyone else finding British TV drab? I blame Netflix! :o)

I don't watch US programmes as the actors mutter too much. I missed Spooks and Waking The Dead first time round so am catching up with them. I liked LOD for a time but got bored with it towards the end of the last series as I thought it was predictable

Yes Naomi I totally agree, up to the point that I really do begrudge paying my TV licence for the rubbish that is shown on terrestrial TV these days. Shows like Breaking Bad ,Better Call Saul, The Handmaids Tale, Messiah, are some examples of excellent programmes on the subscription channels. We have given up on Marcella and a few other series that have returned a shadow of their original selves. Even the last series of Silent Witness was a shadow of its former self.

We’ve watched quite a bit of Ozark, and also Cardinal which is Canadian - BBC2. We couldn’t get on with Peaky Blinders so we abandoned that.

I gave up with Silent Witness after one totally ridiculous storyline that ended with.....well, I won't say in case it's repeated. But I fell about laughing at the implausibilty of it then was angry because I'd spent 2 hrs watching it.

We’ve recently discovered Outlander on Netflix, not the sort of series we would normally go for, but both of us are loving it

Just to point out yet again, that the licence fee is for a TV or other device for watching live programmes , not to watch BBC :-)
The only difference is you need one for all BBC output but you'd also need one unless all you ever did was watch non-BBC on catch-up.

You might think that is daft and I would not necessearily disagree, but it's the case.

Yes it was bednobs. On Ch4. I watched 2/3 of the first episode and hated it. Never bothered again.
Interestingly I read on the BBC news website a fewer weeks back that Britbox was doing really well in the US, compared to over here. So it may be a case of the grass on the other side always being greener.
Frankly the thought of an endless diet of US TV makes me shudder. I watch very little TV anyway, but find enough to enjoy. Like ITV3 and the Drama channel.

I've only seen Outlander on Prime, Jude. Enjoyed the first 4 seasons but finding it difficult to get into the 5th.

It's a job to beat Line Of Duty. When it comes to dramas, I think the Brits win hands down.

In recent years I have enjoyed Killing Eve, Line of Duty, Luther, The Night Manager, Bodyguard, Victoria, A Very English Scandal, Peaky Blinders, Broadchurch, Sherlock, Des, Strike, Ripper Street, Dr Foster and plenty more.
I can't relate to US dramas but I loved Frasier and Cheers at the time.

British TV* at its best is world beating. American TV* is also very good. The best from both countries goes for worldwide steaming. The dross (there is plenty of it in the UK and US) fades away and is forgotten about.

* But the truth is that everything made now is for the international market and made with funding from various countries. The Night Manager was made by the BBC and a US network. Netflix and Amazon are not US only, they make a good deal of their money from the UK and the rest of the world.
