Err cause that's how the film industry works. You want to see a film you pay?
I gather there is a cost to upgrade them for the screen resolutions of modern TV's / devices and a lack of demand to mitigate it.
This is a good source;

some you do, some you don't, it depends whether they're on a terrestrial channel (or their catchup services) or a pay channel, or if they aren't on TV at all and you have to look for them on streaming services or buy a DVD.

Try Pluto TV - its free
Question Author
can you get pluto TV on Sky
Ah forgot about that they are not subtitled:(
Have you got a smart tv? If not you can get it on computer or tablet.
jj, Talking Pictures subtitle most of their old movies these days so if you can access it where you are, keep an eye on their schedules

https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/subtitles/

They also have that catchup service I linked to before (I just linked to one horror page, they have a much wider range)
Now Voyager (BBC2) and Dark Victory (BBC4) are on TV next week and should have subtitles, if you can get those channels.
Question Author
oh that's great Jno - oh I will be going down to record them now. thanks
Question Author
Jno - looked at next week's BBC2 and BBC4 for those pictures - went through hour by hour - but couldn't find them.
If you have Sky Q just speak into the remote and it will find it for you
Dark Victory Saturday 145pm BBC2
Now Voyager Saturday 325pm BBC2
