I agree. All this nauseating guff about what a great broadcaster he is gets on my nerves - I cannot stand him, and even have to turn the radio off if he comes on a trailer on someone else's show.
Much prefer SW to his replacement Scott Mills. I usually listen to R2 until JV at 12, switch to local radio for a couple of hours, then switch back at 2. Won't be doing that come September.
It will be interesting to see how the audience figures measure up once Mills has settled in.
Unfortunately he is staying at Radio 2 to do 'other projects' - I wonder if he will remain on his eye-watering salary of £465,000?
I liked him in my younger days when he was on Radio One, even now I sometimes switch over to him on occasion far less nauseating than 'Talksport' tonguing Littlepool' and Man Cities' cream cheeks for hours.
I like him. Can't stand Scott Mills. Each to his own. Today I am listening to radio 2 - well I was until the dreadful Elaine Page session came on. Jeremy Vine always gets switched off. Useless!! I shall miss Steve Wright but at least he will still be there on Sunday mornings.
I'm surprised that nobody has suggested that the reason that Steve Wright has been "axed" is that Radio 2 isn't fulfilling the Beeb's LGBTQ+ quota...hence Scott Mills replacing him. Which would be a silly suggestion.
(Personally, since buying an internet radio, we never listen to any U.K. radio at all.)
Just been reading about this. I also cant stand him, or Scott Mills, so it will be local radio for me. I won't listen to Elaine Paige either.
Where are Smashie and Nicey when you need them?
The great problem with Steve Wright is he loves the sound of his own voice. During his week day programme he would ask listeners what they're doing and instead of leaving it there he then rattles on listing all the things they might/could be doing, totally unnecessary, we're not stupid. Unfortunately he will be developing his jockin' piece into a programme. Instead of getting that ridiculous salary, which he can't be worth if the BBC are taking him off, he should be removed completely for being responsible for gradually removing the letter G from the end of words. A traffic reporter the other day referred to an incident and said the police were stoppin the traffic.

You are jokin', right?
Two of the main reasons I cannot listen to him:

He talks over the music
He rarely says what the song was when it finishes

He should listen to his colleague Ken Bruce, who is a consummate pro, who never speaks over the music and always back-announces the song.
He drives me potty too talking over the end of records be glad to see him go
Totally agree GG I love Ken Bruce an excellent broadcaster
However, Ken Bruce-style broadcasting is only suitable for a "mature" audience...not the demographic that Radio 2 is now interested in.
Ah, I quite like Steve Wright. However I've discovered Boom Radio and loving it. It may have been someone on here who suggested it?

Ken Bruce is brilliant. A real asset.
I don't mind Steve Wright. I read that the Beeb is after a younger audience, 30-40 year olds but surely they would mostly be at work in the afternoon.
I agree, Ken Bruce is an excellent broadcaster. I wonder though, who selects the music on his programme, of late it has become repetitive and boring. Having listened to Ken for a long time on various programmes I got the impression his taste covers a broad range of music, as does mine, but that isn't being reflected in his daily shows.
Bring back Terry Wogan, I say!
I would have put OJ Borg in that slot.
