not sure what category this falls in ,how does a radio station make it's money? obviously a commercial radio station (like capital radio ) makes money from its ads ,but a non commercial station like radio 1 where does the income come from?

All bbc radio stations are funded by the tv license payers money .well i think thats how it works ,i can't see any other way.

All of the BBC's domestic output , both radio and TV, is funded primarily through the television licence fee (although, of course, the BBC also has a commercial division- selling DVDs, books, etc - which also contributes to the Corporation's funds).

Roughly 17% of your TV licence fee goes towards funding the BBC's radio services. These include Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Five Live, Radio Scotland, Radio Wales, 6 Music, BBC7 and about 50 local or regional radio stations.

There was once a Radio licence, and money from that was used to fund the BBC's early experiments in TV.

I can't remember when the radio licence was phased out ( 1970's ? ), but as the others have answered, BBC Radio is now funded from the TV licence.

A radio station mainly make money from ads and also the listener's satisfaction. If listeners are not satisfied then no need to continue with the channel. Refer to ghanatalksradio for famous radio channel.
