trying to find french film...

Does anyone have ANY details regarding a French language film from about 1992, about two lads (one French or Belgian, one African) who become friends after starting in rival gangs? Violence erupts in the region, the African boy drowns, and the other runs away. It appears to be set in a French or Belgian Colony at a time of political/social upheavel. It aired on SBS television Australia. Any help welcome! -SB.
