I am led to belive that the doctor can only regenerate 12 times what will happen then, fair enough the series could run and run (judging by the success of the current series) but if Tennant ever calls it a day we only have 2 more left. Will the rules be bent only time or a die hard fan will tell. Who knows?

The rules will have to be bent.It seems actors do not want to be typecast so leave fairly shortly into the characters life nowadays.

The only way to stop this happening would be like they do in the u.s. ie tie them into a contract for 5 or more seasons.

Of course the rules will be bent, if the show is still successful, the Beeb won't end it because one writer came up with the idea of a limited number of lives for Time Lords.

After all, the only reason he regenerates is to allow a different actor to play the part. It was never an idea right from the birth of the show.

Back when the Time Lords were alive, they gave The Master a whole new regeneration cycle in return for his help. The Time Lords all supposedly died during the time war, but the Emporer Dalek survived so it's possible that The Doctor may not be the last of his kind after all... Could be a way around it then if there are other Time Lords with the power to give The Doctor a new regeneration cycle...

I suspect the secret that the Face of Boe needs to tell the Doctor may have something to do with this. The destruction of the Timelords allows for all sorts of manipulation to allow them to continue, but as the others have said, they will find a way to let it continue as long as it gets ratings.

The Doctor can regenerate 12 times so 13 actors can play the role.After that some way will be found for him to continue.
