From Bilbo Baggins, who took the original adventure in The Hobbit.
he knows because his uncle Bilbo has told him all about his travels, and Bilbo met Smeegle and tricked him into letting the ring go.
Terryn thats not quite true, Bilbo didn't trick smeagol at all. Bilbo did however tell frodo about the adventures he had which included meeting smeagol.
Even Gollum had forgotten that he used to be Smeagol. It's Gandalf who knows - through some clever questioning of Bilbo and putting 2 and 2 together basically. And because he's magic and knows stuff.
And Bilbo did trick Smeagol into giving the ring over! The question 'what's in my pocket' Gollum had asked - obviously was going to be the ring, except Gollum had dropped the ring and Bilbo found it, so Bilbo correctly answered nothing. So sort of a trick.

I am such a geek aaagh!

tnx guys
No.....it was Bilbo who asked the "whats in my pocket" question.....as he already had found the ring, and the riddles were for Bilbo to win the right to be shown the way out of the tunnel. So as he already had possesion of the ring, he did not "trick" smeagol into handing anything over! Go read the book again, i think you'll find i'm right.
