Amsterdam
I have booked up a holiday for a few days to Amsterdam for my blokes birthday next month. We are going on a cruise and staying for a night in Amsterdam. I have been looking for hotels and have found one that is quite cheap (67) and looks really nice. Its the Crowne Plaza in AMSTERDAM-SCHIPHOL. We are being taken by coach to Amsterdam train station on the Friday morning and then have until Saturday night in the city. Does anyone with previous knwledge of Amsterdam know if AMSTERDAM-SCHIPHOL is far away. Obviously I dont want to book it if it means alot of travelling to and from the city centre. Is Amsterdam a big place because if not I guess it will be relatively easy to get too.

We had to take a train from Schiphol to the centre of Amsterdam, but it was easy enough and I don't think took more than ten ish minutes?? That said, we stayed in a (very cheap) hotel in the centre of Amsterdam (just off Leidesplein) and it was really handy. If I were you, I'd maybe look about for a hotel nearer the centre, just to make sightseeing, and stumbling back to the hotel, easier.
Schipol is on the outskirts of Amsterdam. It's where the airport is. The hotel is actually 2km from the airport

and the airport is a 15 minute train journey away from central Amsterdam

For loads of cheap hotels in central Amsterdam go to http://www.hostelworld.com
(Don't be put off by the word 'hostel' in that name. There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses on that site). Enter your information in the search fields and then click 'Additional search options'. Then put ticks alongside 'Budget Hotels' and 'Guesthouses'.
Here's just one example with good customer feedback:
Truelove Guesthouse: En suite, doubled bedded room at 26.32 per per per night.
There are plenty of others to choose from. (Note that a 'customer satisfaction percentage' only appears on the index page if there have been more than 6 reports in the past 6 months. However, you can still see the scores for other places by clicking on the individual details).
