cigars v cigarettes

How come it seems to be more socially acceptable to smoke cigars than cigarettes?
A lot of Hollywood men smoke cigars and often when pictures are being taken the cigars are focal points. Is it because cigars can be very expensive so it's deemed posh?
Just look at Dirk Benedict entering the BB house with a cigar in his hand and posing for pics with it in his mouth. I can't see anyone entering the BB house with a fag in their hand
