Why do the BAFTA film awards masks have one eye open and one eye closed? And why was a mask chosen as the award statue, and when did they introduce this? Thanks to anyone who can help.

As far as I am aware the mask is made from the two faces of comedy and tragedy, comedy which has it's eyes open and tragedy which is crying and has eyes shut therefore one eye open and one closed... this may not be 100% correct so if anyone else knows different then please set me straight.
