Do you think that The Archers, would make a good transition, from radio to television? It would be nice to see some decent middle class values portrayed, instead of having to watch all those working class ruffians, screaming and shouting at one another. I'm sure the nation would take them to their hearts and their standards would become a benchmark, for us all.

Sad to say, but this has already been done, so to speak. Remember Emmerdale Farm? Before too long the producers or suits who watch all the ratings decided that the "Farm" bit wasn't attracting the viewers, so it was dropped.
Remember also Howard's Way? About a boatyard? I started watching this in the 1980s with high expectations that we would see another great boardroom drama series like The Plane Makers, but after about four episodes or so the boat-building and repairing faded away and it became just another soap.
The problem is that the main audience for this sort of thing is female, and 90% or so are not intrested in techy stuff (or farming, or whatever the work actually is).
The Archers was actually started as a painless way of conveying to anyone working on the land (a far greater percentage in 1951 than now) important information from government etc. regarding various regulations or other relevant news.
It works on radio, especially since the Archers is only 15 minutes.
I hope this suggested explanation has been helpful.

Are you kidding? I have only been a fan for a couple of years, but in that time we have had an affair between a woman and her brother in law, resulting in not knowing who the father of her baby was, then the blood test which revealed who it was and then all three falling out, a drug addict who went on a bender and ended up in the gutter, a farmers wife who was having an affair with the herdsman, a happily married father who's ex bit on the side died and left him to bring up his illigitimate son, a gay wedding, a rape victim who is now regretting not reporting it as the perpetrator has done it to someone else - need I go on? Decent middle class values???? Oh yes, I forgot the cheat at the village vegetable show!
